Even and Odd Trig Functions
Even/Odd Identities
Recall:
Even functions are symmetric along the y-axis.
Odd functions are symmetric along the origin.
A good way to remember this is --> Origin and Odd both start with O.
Symmetry along the origin Symmetry along the y-axis
replace -x for x and -y for y replace -x for x
f(-t) = -f(t) odd function f(-t) = f(t) even function
Opposite angle identities
sin(-t) = -sin(t) is an odd function
This image highlights the symmetry along the origin.
tan(-t) = -tan(t) is an odd function
This image highlights the symmetry along the origin.
cos(-t) = cos(t) is an even function
This image highlights the symmetry along the y-axis.
